Abstract

Paints and coatings developed for the fast-growing automobile production in the first half of the 20th century have  been eagerly adopted by other industries and also were employed in arts and crafts or the fine arts. Materials like this  in the meantime have to be regarded „historic“, as most of these formulations have vanished from the market today. However, in the conservation and restoration of technical heritage, original coatings of this kind require special treatment and care,  so for  efficient preservation it is important to understand their composition and characteristics.

My research adresses coating formulations used for motor vehicles in the first half of the 20th century, connecting archival documents and contemporary professional literature with scientific analysis of historic material samples and experimental tests of related formulations.
